White House Prefers Bipartisan Support for Tax Reform

White House officials have been engaging Democrats on tax reform, according to a report from Politico.

"We'd prefer bipartisan support for the tax plan," Marc Short, White House director of legislative affairs, told Politico. "We still think we can earn the support of [Democrats] on the tax package."

Politico says President Donald Trump's team has quietly been engaged with Democrats since June. Though Democrats in the House and Senate are open to working on bipartisan tax reform, it's the easier fight for Republicans – no Democrats need apply, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell said in essence last week.

But Senate Democrats also are warning their peers against using reconciliation – implementing a simple 51-vote majority – to pass tax cuts, especially if it adds to the deficit, Politico reported.

McConnell "did the same thing with healthcare," Democrats Sen. Jon Tester told Politico. "We offered to help and he said, 'No, I'm going to run it down your throat.' He's going to do the same thing with taxes, and it's bad public policy when you don't bring people together to have a debate."

However, Republicans are more united on tax reform than they were on health care. House Speaker Paul Ryan said 97 percent of Republicans are in accord on tax relief.

"I think there are a lot of practical folks in the House, Senate and the administration who are looking at healthcare and saying, 'That didn't work. Maybe we should have a backup Plan B – a coalition of Democrats and Republicans,'" New York Republican Rep. Tom Reed told Politico.

As the Lord leads, please pray:
• For President Trump and his team as they work on tax reform
• For members of Congress from both parties as they work on tax policy
• That America’s leaders will work on the issues of concern to those who elected them
